Driving in Canada: Essential Rules

Canada is a country of distances, and a hire car is how you close them — from the Rockies and the Icefields Parkway to the Cabot Trail and the Gaspé peninsula, the landscapes that define a Canadian trip sit well beyond the reach of public transport. Driving is straightforward and courteous, but the rules are set by each province, and a few of them catch visitors out. Nearly every hire car is automatic, and all signage is metric — speeds in km/h, distances in kilometres.

• Side of the road: In Canada you drive on the right-hand side and overtake on the left.
• Rules vary by province: Speed limits, penalties, and equipment rules are provincial. The defaults below cover most of the country, but posted signs always take precedence — and in Quebec, signage is in French, with stop signs reading "Arrêt".
• Right turn on red — except Montreal: Turning right on a red light after a complete stop is permitted across Canada, with one firm exception: it is prohibited everywhere on the island of Montreal, signed at every point of entry. This is the classic visitor mistake, and local police watch for it.
• School buses: When a yellow school bus stops with its red lights flashing, traffic in both directions must come to a complete stop and wait until the lights stop and the bus moves off. This is among the most strictly enforced rules in the country.
• Winter tyres: In Quebec, winter tyres are mandatory on every car — including hire cars — from 1 December to 15 March. In British Columbia, winter tyres or chains are required on designated highways, signed at their entrances, from 1 October to 30 April. Elsewhere they are strongly recommended in winter. If your trip touches Quebec or the BC mountains in the cold months, confirm the car is properly equipped before you drive off.
• Alcohol limit: The criminal limit is 0.08% nationwide, but several provinces impose administrative penalties — including immediate licence suspension — from 0.05%. Enforcement is tougher than the numbers suggest, and penalties are severe. If you plan to drive, the safest amount is none.
• Mobile phones: Handheld phone use while driving is prohibited in every province, with substantial fines. Hands-free use is permitted.
• Stopped emergency vehicles: Slow down and move over a lane where possible when passing police, ambulance, or breakdown vehicles stopped at the roadside — a legal requirement across the provinces.
• Wildlife and distances: Moose and deer are a serious collision risk on rural roads, most active at dawn and dusk — take wildlife warning signs literally, particularly in the east and north. Distances between towns can be long, so plan fuel stops on remote routes and allow more time than the map suggests.

Most Canadian roads are toll-free. The main exception is Highway 407 ETR around Toronto — fully electronic, with no toll booths: cameras photograph the number plate and bill the vehicle's owner, which for a hire car means the charge reaches you through your supplier with an administration fee, often weeks later. If you would rather avoid it, the parallel 401 and 400 are toll-free. A handful of bridges in Quebec and the Maritimes also carry tolls. Confirm your supplier's toll arrangements at collection if your route includes the Toronto area.
