Driving in Cyprus: Essential Rules

Cyprus is an easy island to love from behind the wheel. • Metric measurements: Despite driving on the left, Cyprus signs speeds in km/h and distances in kilometres.
• Alcohol limit: The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05% — equivalent to 22 micrograms per 100ml of breath — with a stricter limit for drivers holding a licence for fewer than three years. Police carry out random breath tests, and penalties escalate steeply with the reading. If you plan to drive, the safest amount is none.

Rural tracks and mountain roads put tyres and the underbody under more strain than the motorways, so check your booking confirmation for the specific cover terms applicable to your hire, as scope can vary by supplier.

One rule is specific to Cyprus and worth settling before you book: the island is divided, and hire cars collected in the Republic of Cyprus are generally not insured — and under many rental contracts not permitted — beyond the crossing points to the north. Where a supplier does allow the crossing, separate third-party insurance must be purchased at the checkpoint, and your rental cover does not follow the car. Confirm your supplier's policy at the time of booking if a crossing is part of your plans; crossing without the correct cover leaves you personally liable for any damage or claim.
