Driving in Fiji: Essential Rules

A hire car opens up Fiji well beyond the resort shuttle route. The Coral Coast, the Sigatoka Valley, and the villages along the Kings and Queens Roads are all within easy reach of Nadi, and having your own car means setting your own pace between beaches, waterfalls, and local markets. Driving here is straightforward on the main routes and genuinely adventurous beyond them — here is what to expect.

• Side of the road: In Fiji you drive on the left-hand side, and most hire cars are right-hand drive, which visitors from left-hand-drive countries should take a little extra care with at first, particularly at roundabouts and uncontrolled intersections.
• Where you can actually drive: Fiji has 333 islands, but hire cars are only available on three: Viti Levu — the main island, with the best roads and the widest supplier choice — plus Vanua Levu and Taveuni. Reaching any other island for a day trip means a ferry, without the car.
• Sealed and unsealed roads: Of Fiji's roughly 7,500 km of roads, only around 1,700 km are sealed — chiefly the Kings Road and Queens Road, which together loop the coast of Viti Levu between Nadi and Suva, plus the main road linking Savusavu and Labasa on Vanua Levu. Venture off these routes and expect gravel or dirt, potholes, and the occasional river ford — a standard car is fine for the coastal loop, but a 4WD is the sensible choice for inland or rural exploring.
• Alcohol limit: The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08%. Police checkpoints are common on weekend nights around the main towns. If you plan to drive, moderation is the safest approach.
• Animals and pedestrians: Dogs, chickens, and livestock wander onto rural roads, and villages along the Kings and Queens Roads see plenty of pedestrian and roadside activity — slow down through every settlement, and take extra care after dark, when animals and people on the road are harder to see.
• Fuel: Stations cluster in the main towns and along the Queens Road; they thin out on the Kings Road and inland, and few operate 24 hours outside Nadi and Suva. Fill up before a longer or more remote drive, and check your fuel-return policy at collection.
• Mobile phones: Handheld phone use while driving is illegal. Hands-free use is permitted.
• Seatbelts: Mandatory for the driver and all passengers.
