Driving and Parking in Düsseldorf: What You Need to Know
- Rules of the road: Germany drives on the right. The limit is 50 km/h in built-up areas and 100 km/h on rural roads, and 130 km/h is the recommended speed on Autobahn sections without a posted limit. Many stretches around Düsseldorf carry a lower posted limit, so follow the signs rather than the advisory figure.
- The low emission zone: Düsseldorf has a low emission zone that covers whole neighbourhoods, not only the pedestrian centre, and only a green sticker is accepted. Every road into the zone carries a green sign, and the Autobahn is exempt. Entering without the right sticker is listed at €100. Check the windscreen for the sticker when you collect the car, and ask the supplier if it is missing.
- Paid parking zones: On-street parking is charged per 12 minutes, by zone. In the central zones 1a and 1b the rate is listed at €0.90 per 12 minutes, about €4.50 an hour, in zone 2 it is €0.60, about €3.00 an hour, and in zone 3 it is €0.40, about €2.00 an hour. Weekday paid hours run from 9:00 am to between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm, depending on the zone.
- How to pay: Pay at a ticket machine, which accepts coins and often contactless, or by a parking app linked to your number plate. Some kerbside spaces are reserved for residents or permit holders, so read the sign at the bay.
- Garages in the centre: The Q-Park Stadtmitte is listed at about €3.00 an hour with a daily maximum of about €10 to €12, and the Parkhaus am Carlsplatz at about €3.00 an hour with a daily maximum of about €35. The Tiefgarage Grabbeplatz is open 24 hours with a daily maximum of about €30, and the Schadow Arkaden garage starts at about €3.50 an hour. Clearances are listed between 1.80 m and 1.95 m, so check the height of a van or a car with a roof box. Prices come from a single listing, so confirm them at the entrance.
- Carnival closures: In 2027 Weiberfastnacht falls on Thursday 4 February and the Rosenmontag parade on Monday 8 February. Many streets close for the parades and trams run extra services, so use public transport in the centre on those days and plan a route that avoids the parade streets.
- The airport: Düsseldorf Airport is about 8 km north of the city centre, roughly 10 minutes by car. The A44 runs past it, and junction 31 leads to the terminal, with the B1 leading south to the city, the A3 skirting the east of the city and the A52 leading north towards Essen.
- Keeping the car overnight: Ask your hotel whether it has parking and what it charges before you book, because garage charges in the centre add to the cost of the trip. A car left on the street should be parked in a marked bay with a valid ticket, and never in a loading area or on a pavement.
- Trade fair weeks: Large events at the city's trade fair grounds raise traffic and parking demand across the city. If your dates coincide with a major fair, allow extra time for every journey and check your hotel for its own parking before you arrive.
- Equipment: German law requires a warning triangle, a first-aid kit and a reflective vest in the car. Hire cars are normally equipped, and you can confirm this at collection.
- Winter driving: Tyres with the Alpine symbol are required in snow, ice, slush or black ice. Tyres marked only M+S have not been accepted since 1 October 2024, and winter hires normally come fitted correctly.
- Phone and alcohol: Holding a phone while driving costs €100 and one point. The alcohol limit is 0.5 per mille, and 0.0 applies to novice drivers and drivers under 21. Treat any alcohol before driving as a risk.
- Tolls: Germany has no general toll for cars. Private cars pay only on a few private tunnels elsewhere in the country, and none of the routes below carries a charge, so there is no vignette or transponder to arrange.
- Before you drive away: Photograph the car on all four sides, the wheels, the windscreen and the interior at collection and again at return.
Top Places to Visit from Düsseldorf by Car
- Essen — about 32 km north-east, in roughly 30 minutes, measured from the Gerresheim district. The city sits on the A52 route north from the airport and has its own low emission zone, so keep the green sticker on the windscreen. Park outside the centre and take the train in if you plan to spend the day in the city.
- Cologne — about 39 km south, in roughly 27 minutes. The cathedral city makes an easy day trip, and the return drive keeps you in a single base. Park in a garage rather than the street, because the rules vary from one street to the next.
- Velbert — about 29 km east, in roughly 28 minutes. The town on the edge of the Bergisches Land suits a quieter drive away from the Rhine, with less traffic than the roads towards Cologne and Essen.
- Xanten — about 62 km north-west, in roughly 42 minutes, measured from neighbouring Neuss. The town on the lower Rhine is a longer half-day, so allow extra time on the return in the evening.
When is the Best Time to Hire a Car in Düsseldorf?
Peak season: June to August is the busiest period for visitors, with long daylight hours that suit the day trips above. Carnival around 4 to 8 February 2027 is the busiest week of the year in the city, and the weeks before Christmas also fill hotels and roads. Collect the car on the day you leave the city for the day trips, because the centre is easier on foot, by tram or by train than by car.
Shoulder season: April to May and September to October bring steadier traffic and milder weather. Roads are easier to read, and a day on the Autobahn is less tiring than in the heat of July.
Low season: January and March are the quietest periods for visitors. Daylight is limited, and winter tyre rules apply in wintry conditions. Allow extra time on the Autobahn after snow, and plan longer drives to leave and arrive in daylight.
Advance booking: Book several weeks ahead for the summer and the pre-Christmas weeks, and earlier for carnival, automatic cars or larger vehicles. Free cancellation means booking early carries no penalty.
How Payment Works for Car Hire in Düsseldorf
A rental prepayment confirms your booking online with Instant Confirmation, and you pay the balance directly to the supplier on arrival. The price and vehicle class shown at booking are the terms you receive at the desk, and cancellation is free. The supplier may place an excess hold on the main driver's credit card, so check that the card in the driver's name has enough available limit.

-
Can I get zero-excess cover in Düsseldorf?

What is the minimum age to hire a car in Düsseldorf?

- One-way hire may be available between locations, and an additional fee can apply. Select a different drop-off location when you search, and the price shown before you confirm includes the one-way terms for that booking.
-
Do I need a green sticker to drive a hire car in Düsseldorf?
- Yes. Düsseldorf has a low emission zone that covers whole neighbourhoods, and only a green sticker is accepted. Entering without it is listed at €100. Check the windscreen for the sticker at collection and ask the supplier if it is missing.

Always check your booking confirmation for the specific terms applicable to your hire.

- The main driver should present a credit card in their own name, with a limit high enough to cover the standard excess hold placed by the supplier. Check your booking confirmation for the card types the supplier accepts before you travel.
-
