Navigating Athens: Local Traffic and Parking
- Athens Traffic & Zones: Driving into central Athens comes with a few rules worth knowing. The city operates a traffic restriction scheme called the Daktylios — meaning "ring" — which uses a simple odd-even system: plates ending in an odd number enter on odd dates, even plates on even dates. For most visitors this is not an issue. Foreign-registered rental cars are exempt from the restriction unless the vehicle has been in Greece for more than 40 consecutive days. Electric, hybrid, LPG and CNG vehicles can enter freely any day of the week. If a permit is needed for an extended stay, these are arranged through Greece's official portal at gov.gr. Avoid driving in central Athens between 7:30–9:30am and 5:00–8:00pm on weekdays. Also note that the historic neighbourhoods of Plaka, Monastiraki, and Thiseio have pedestrian-only streets — park up and explore these areas on foot.
- Parking Availability: Athens uses a colour-coded street parking system. Blue-marked spaces are paid hourly for visitors. White-marked spaces are resident-permit only — do not park here even if they look empty. Hourly rates range from €0.50 to €1.50 depending on the zone, with a three-hour maximum stay. Street parking is free after 9:00pm, all day Sunday, and on public holidays. For a hassle-free experience, staffed underground garages are available near most landmarks and metro stations, typically costing €15–€25 per day. Note that leaving your keys with the attendant is standard practice in Athens garages. If you plan to spend time in the city centre, Park & Ride is the smartest option. Facilities near Syngrou-Fix, Nomismatokopio, and Halandri metro stations cost just €10–€15 per day, letting you leave the car safely and travel in by metro without the stress of central parking.
When is the Best Time to Rent a Car in Athens?
Athens is one of those rare destinations that rewards visitors year-round, but when to rent makes a significant difference — both to your budget and to your overall experience behind the wheel.
Peak Season — July & August This is when Athens is at its busiest and its most expensive. Demand for rental cars surges, availability tightens, and prices can be three to five times higher than in winter. If you are planning a summer visit, booking your car well in advance — ideally two to three months ahead — is essential to secure the vehicle you want at a reasonable rate. Last-minute summer bookings in Athens frequently result in limited choice and inflated prices.
Shoulder Season — April, May, June & September, October This is the sweet spot for most travellers. The weather is warm and very pleasant, the major attractions are far less crowded, and car rental prices are significantly more competitive than peak summer. Spring in particular — April through early June — offers some of the best driving conditions in the region, with green landscapes, comfortable temperatures, and open roads. September and October are equally rewarding as the summer crowds begin to thin while the warmth remains.
Low Season — November through March If your trip is flexible and sightseeing rather than beach-going is your priority, the winter months offer the lowest rental rates of the year by a considerable margin. Athens itself has a mild winter by European standards and continues to attract visitors to its ancient sites throughout the year. Availability is plentiful, prices are at their lowest, and the city feels genuinely local rather than tourist-heavy.
Our Honest Advice For the best balance of good weather, fair prices, and an enjoyable driving experience around Athens and the wider Attica region, aim for May, June, or September. You get the best of everything — without the peak season premium or the peak season crowds. Whatever time of year you travel, booking in advance always works in your favour. It locks in your preferred vehicle, your rate, and with eCarBookers, your fully inclusive peace of mind from the moment you pick up the keys.
Day Trips from Athens by Rental Car — Three Routes Worth Every Kilometre
One of the greatest advantages of renting a car in Athens is the freedom to explore some of Greece's most breathtaking destinations at your own pace. Within a two-hour drive of the city you will find ancient temples, romantic seaside towns, and legendary archaeological sites that rival anything in Europe. Here are three day trips that are consistently among the most searched and most loved by visitors to the Greek capital.
- Cape Sounion — The Temple Above the Sea Approximately 70km from Athens — around 1 hour by car. Cape Sounion is one of the most iconic drives in all of Greece and makes for a perfect half-day escape from the city. The coastal road south from Athens hugs the Attic coastline, offering stunning views of the Aegean at almost every turn. At the tip of the cape stands the ancient Temple of Poseidon, perched dramatically on a cliff edge with the sea stretching endlessly below. Arrive in the late afternoon to catch the sunset behind the marble columns — one of those travel moments that stays with you long after the trip is over. Without a rental car, this journey is significantly harder to do on your own schedule.
- Delphi — The Centre of the Ancient World Approximately 180km from Athens — around 2 hours by car. Delphi is one of Greece's most important and atmospheric archaeological sites, and driving there is very much part of the experience. The route takes you through the mountains of central Greece, with the landscape becoming increasingly dramatic as you climb toward the site. In ancient times Delphi was considered the very centre of the world — home to the famous Oracle whose prophecies shaped the course of history. The archaeological museum on site is exceptional. Allow a full day for this trip and set off early to make the most of it.
- Nafplio — Greece's Most Romantic Town Approximately 140km from Athens — around 1 hour 45 minutes by car. Nafplio was the first capital of modern Greece and remains one of the most beautiful and walkable small towns in the country. Elegant Venetian architecture lines its narrow streets, bougainvillea spills over old stone walls, and the 18th century Palamidi fortress watches over everything from the hilltop above. The harbour views are lovely and the restaurant scene is genuinely excellent. For travellers who want history, beauty, and a good lunch all in one day, Nafplio consistently tops the list. It also sits close to the ancient site of Mycenae, making it easy to combine both into a single memorable day out.
All three of these destinations are best explored with the freedom of your own vehicle. With an eCarBookers fully inclusive rental you can set off with complete peace of mind — no excess to worry about, no surprises on return, just the open road and some of the finest scenery Greece has to offer.
Frequently asked questions
-
Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Athens?
- This is one of the most common questions we receive from visitors planning to rent a car in Athens — and the answer depends on where your driving licence was issued. Greece updated its legislation in November 2021 to recognise a wider range of national driving licences. As a result, visitors holding a valid licence issued in any European Union country, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, or Australia can rent and drive a car in Greece without needing an International Driving Permit. Your national licence is sufficient on its own. If your licence was issued in a country outside of those listed above, you will need to obtain an International Driving Permit before travelling. This must be carried alongside your original licence at all times — it is not a replacement for it, but a companion document that allows local authorities and rental companies to verify your credentials. One piece of practical advice we always give our customers: even if you are exempt from the requirement, obtaining an International Driving Permit before your trip is a sensible and inexpensive precaution. Policies can vary between individual rental companies, and arriving with both documents eliminates any possibility of complications at the collection desk. Most national motoring associations issue them quickly and at minimal cost. Our simple rule of thumb — when in doubt, carry both. It takes minutes to arrange and could save you a great deal of stress on the day you pick up your car.
-
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Athens?
- The minimum age to rent a car in Athens is 21 years old, though some vehicle categories — including larger, premium, and automatic cars — are only available to drivers aged 25 and over. Drivers between 21 and 24 are classified as young drivers and are typically subject to a daily young driver surcharge, which is charged at the rental desk at time of collection. The exact fee varies by supplier and vehicle category. If you are travelling as a younger driver and want full clarity on exactly what you will pay with no surprises at the counter, our fully inclusive booking model is particularly well suited to you — everything is transparent before you confirm, so there are no unexpected charges when you arrive.
-
Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Athens?
- Yes — and this is something worth preparing for well in advance. Almost all car rental companies in Athens require a credit card in the driver's name at the time of vehicle collection. The card is used to place a security deposit hold, which covers any potential damage, traffic fines, or fuel charges during the rental period. This is where booking through eCarBookers makes a real difference. Because every one of our rentals is fully inclusive — with comprehensive insurance and zero excess — the deposit requirement at the desk is significantly lower than with a standard bare-rate booking, where the hold can run to several hundred euros. With our fully inclusive rates, you show up with far less financial exposure and drive away with complete peace of mind. Debit cards are not accepted by most suppliers in Athens, so if you only have a debit card it is worth contacting us before booking so we can advise on the best available options.
