Driving and Parking in Badhoevedorp: What You Need to Know
- Where the village sits: Badhoevedorp is in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, in North Holland, on land about 3 m below sea level. The A9 motorway ran through the village from 1967 until it was diverted to the south on 10 April 2017, and the old section was removed to make room for housing and a business park. If a navigation system or an older map still shows the former line, follow the road signs.
- The main road in: The Schipholweg (N232) is the main access road into the village, and it also leads towards Schiphol. Several streets run north from it, including the Sloterweg. The municipality's 2020 traffic plan kept a ban on turning left from the Schipholweg into the Sloterweg, so approach from the direction the signs allow.
- Village streets: The municipality's traffic plan designates residential streets such as Robert Kochstraat and Zeemanlaan as 30 km/h roads, and it cuts through traffic at the centre of Zeemanlaan. The car park for the centre is reached from both sides. Treat every residential street as 30 km/h unless a sign says otherwise.
- Nieuwemeerdijk restrictions: The municipality's plan describes a camera-enforced ban on heavy goods vehicles on the Nieuwemeerdijk and a peak-hour ban on cars and motorcycles. Check the signs before you use it as a short cut.
- Cyclists and priority: When you turn, give way to cyclists and moped riders going straight ahead, even on a green light. Priority from the right applies on unmarked junctions in residential streets, and shark's teeth markings mean give way.
- Getting into Amsterdam: Diesel cars face a low emission zone inside the A10 ring road, with Euro 5 or newer listed for Amsterdam, and the rules apply to foreign vehicles. The village lies outside the ring. Petrol cars are not affected.
- Park and ride on the western side: The Amsterdam park and ride sites P+R Sloterdijk (exit S102) and P+R Bos en Lommer (exit S105 from the west) are the nearest to this side of the city. The rate is €6 a day off-peak and €13 for weekday arrivals before 10:00 am, with a four-day maximum, and it applies only if you continue into the centre zone by public transport and pay within an hour of checking out.
- 30 km/h in Amsterdam: Since 8 December 2023 the limit is 30 km/h on about 80% of Amsterdam's roads. Weesperstraat, Prins Hendrikkade and Piet Heinkade stay at 50 km/h, so the drive in from the village is faster than the crossing of the city itself.
- Park and ride tickets: The P+R GVB card covers transit for the people in the car and costs €6 for one or two people, €7 for three, €8.50 for four and €9.50 for five. Do not pay by credit card at the entrance, because that does not give the discount.
- Parking in Amsterdam: Street rates for 2026 range from €0.20 to €8.05 an hour, with the highest rate in the centre. The fine is €79.10 plus at least an hour's parking fee. The Centrum Oosterdok garage near Centraal is listed from €10 to €25 a day when booked in advance, and street parking was free citywide on 27 April in 2026.
- Public transport: The municipality's 2019 transport plan lists the R-net line 356, which links the village with Haarlem, Schiphol and Amstelveen, and the night service N95 to Schiphol. Check current timetables before relying on either.
- Fuel: Most stations sell Euro 95 (E10) and diesel. Prices are generally higher at motorway stations, and the fuel type for your car is shown on your booking confirmation.
- Before you drive away: Photograph the car on all four sides, the wheels, the windscreen and the interior at collection and again at return.
Top Places to Visit from Badhoevedorp by Car
- Keukenhof — about 35 to 40 minutes from Amsterdam by car, and reached by the A4 to exit Nieuw-Vennep, or by the A44 to exit 3, Lisse. The garden is open 18 March to 9 May 2027, from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm, and gates close at 6:15 pm. The large car park is listed at between €9 and €14 a day, so book parking and a timed ticket in advance. Traffic around Lisse can be heavy on busy days, with cyclists and pedestrians on the roads, so drive carefully near the gardens. Bicycles can be rented at the Keukenhof car park, and the last timed entry slot runs from 5:30 to 6:00 pm.
- Zaanse Schans — about 18 to 20 km and 18 to 20 minutes from central Amsterdam via the A8. The open-air village of windmills and workshops on the River Zaan is the shortest trip.
- Zandvoort — about 39 km and roughly 40 minutes from central Amsterdam. The seaside town has the North Sea beach and the Circuit Zandvoort, so allow extra time on race and summer weekends. One guide advises looping round central Amsterdam rather than driving through the centre, which from this side of the city is straightforward.
- Rotterdam — about 60 km south, in roughly 45 minutes from Haarlemmermeer. The Blankenburg connection, the A24 west of the city, is the only toll on the Dutch motorway network for cars, at €1.57 in 2026.
- Utrecht — about 42 km and roughly 43 minutes from central Amsterdam via the A2. The old centre has a diesel low emission zone, so park outside it and walk or take the bus.
When is the Best Time to Hire a Car in Badhoevedorp?
Peak season: Spring is the busiest period for day trips by car, because Keukenhof opens from 18 March to 9 May in 2027 and the roads to Lisse carry heavy traffic. King's Day on 27 April fills Amsterdam, and July and August bring the summer holiday demand.
Shoulder season: The weeks around the tulip season, together with September and October, are steadier. Roads are quieter, and the longer drives to the coast and to Rotterdam are easier.
Low season: November to February is the quietest period for visitors. Trips are shorter and parking is easier, although daylight is limited.
Advance booking: Book several weeks ahead for the tulip season, King's Day and the summer, and earlier for automatic cars or larger vehicles. Free cancellation means booking early carries no penalty.
