Car Hire in Tenerife
Driving and Parking in Tenerife: What You Need to Know
- Drive on the right. Tenerife follows Spain's national road rules, administered by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). Seatbelts are compulsory for all occupants. Using a handheld mobile phone while driving carries a heavy fine. Radar detection devices are illegal to carry in the vehicle, even switched off. Flip-flops and unsuitable footwear are prohibited at the wheel.
- Speed limits. The standard limits across the island are 50 km/h in urban areas (30 km/h on single-lane streets), 90 km/h on conventional roads, and 120 km/h on motorways and dual carriageways (autovías). Local signage takes precedence — mountain roads and resort zones frequently post lower limits. Fixed and mobile speed cameras operate across the island, including unmarked police vehicles. Fines are issued against the registered plate and may be forwarded to a home address if the vehicle is a hire car.
- No toll roads. There are no toll roads anywhere on Tenerife or the wider Canary Islands. The two main motorways — the TF-1 along the southern and eastern coast, and the TF-5 across the north — are free to use at all times.
- Alcohol limit. The legal blood alcohol limit in Spain is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, reduced to 0.3 g/l for novice drivers and professionals. Roadside checks are routine, particularly in resort areas at night.
- Low Emission Zone (ZBE) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Spain's national ZBE legislation requires all municipalities over 50,000 inhabitants to operate a restricted zone. Santa Cruz de Tenerife has an active ZBE covering the city centre. Vehicles must display a valid DGT environmental sticker (etiqueta ambiental) to enter unrestricted. Standard hire cars from most suppliers will carry an appropriate sticker — confirm this at collection. The ZBE is currently in a phased enforcement period; verify current access rules with your supplier before driving into the centre.
- Parking. In town centres across the island, blue-zone (Zona Azul) bays require a parking disc or paid ticket, available from newsagents and petrol stations. Yellow kerb markings indicate restricted or prohibited stopping — parking on yellow lines risks a fine or towing. Underground and multi-storey car parks are the most practical option in busy resort areas such as Costa Adeje and Santa Cruz. Most resort hotels include parking; confirm this at the time of accommodation booking.
- Mountain roads. Routes into the Anaga Rural Park (north-east), the Teno Mountains (north-west), and the ascent to Teide National Park all involve significant gradients, tight hairpin bends, and narrow carriageways. Use engine braking on long descents. Strong crosswinds are common at altitude. A standard economy car handles these roads without difficulty; large or long vehicles require extra caution on mountain routes.
Top Places to Visit from Tenerife by Car
- Teide National Park — accessible from the south via the TF-1 then TF-21, approximately 75 km from Costa Adeje, around 1 hour. Mount Teide, at 3,715 metres, is Spain's highest peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The road through the park is one of the most dramatic drives in Europe — a volcanic plateau surrounded by ancient lava fields. Timed-entry tickets for the summit cable car must be booked in advance in high season.
- Masca Village and the Teno Mountains — approximately 45 km north-west of Costa Adeje via the TF-1 then TF-82, around 55 minutes. The road into Masca is one of the most photographed mountain drives in the Canary Islands — narrow, winding, and spectacular. The village sits in a deep ravine surrounded by sheer cliffs. Arrive early; the road becomes congested by mid-morning in season.
- Garachico — approximately 55 km north-west of Costa Adeje via the TF-1 then TF-42, around 1 hour. A historic coastal town on the northern shore, largely preserved after an 18th-century volcanic eruption destroyed much of the original harbour. The natural lava pools of El Caletón are directly accessible from the town centre, with free parking nearby.
- Anaga Rural Park — approximately 30 km north-east of Santa Cruz via the TF-12, around 40 minutes from the capital. Ancient laurisilva forests, dramatic ridge roads, and the viewpoints of Mirador de Jardina and El Bailadero. The roads through Anaga are narrow and winding — a small or medium car is strongly recommended. One of the least-visited and most rewarding areas on the island.
- Los Gigantes Cliffs — approximately 30 km north-west of Costa Adeje via the TF-1 then TF-82, around 35–40 minutes. Vertical basalt cliffs rising up to 600 metres directly from the sea, best viewed from the harbour at the village of Los Gigantes. A black-sand beach sits below. Combine with the Masca road for a full day's driving circuit from the south.
When is the Best Time to Hire a Car in Tenerife?
Peak season (mid-December through January, and July–August) brings the highest demand across the island. Tenerife draws two distinct peaks — Northern European visitors in winter seeking warm weather, and summer holiday traffic in July and August. Hire fleets are under maximum pressure during both windows; preferred vehicle categories sell out quickly and rates are at their highest. Booking six or more weeks in advance is advisable for either peak period.
Shoulder season (February–June and September–November) offers the best balance of availability, price, and driving conditions. Roads are noticeably quieter outside the main holiday windows, mountain routes are clear, and Teide is more easily accessible without advance permits for the cable car. October and November are particularly good months — the island is warm, the resorts are less congested, and hire rates are competitive. Advance booking of two to three weeks is generally sufficient outside peak periods.
Year-round hire. Unlike many seasonal destinations, Tenerife operates year-round with consistently warm temperatures in the south. Both Tenerife South (TFS) and Tenerife North (TFN) airports have suppliers open throughout the year. There is no true low season for car hire on the island — demand simply eases in the months between the two main peaks.
Frequently asked questions
-
Does my eCarBookers car hire in Tenerife include insurance? What does it cover?
- Every car hire listed on eCarBookers includes collision damage waiver (CDW) cover as part of the supplier's own price — not as a third-party product sold separately at the desk. If there is minor damage to the main body of the vehicle during your hire, there is no excess to pay and no claim to submit. The protection comes directly from the hire company itself. It is worth being aware that tyres, glass, and underbody damage are typically excluded from standard CDW cover across the car hire industry. These situations are uncommon in normal driving but worth noting, particularly if you plan to drive mountain routes such as the road into Masca or the ascent to Teide. Always check your booking confirmation for the exact cover terms applicable to your hire, as scope can vary by supplier.
-
What is the minimum age to hire a car in Tenerife?
- Most suppliers operating at Tenerife South and North airports require the main driver to be at least 21 years old, with a full, valid driving licence held for a minimum of one year. Some suppliers set a minimum age of 23 or 25. Drivers under 25 may incur a young driver surcharge, which varies by supplier and vehicle category. You will need your driving licence, a passport or national ID card, and your booking confirmation at collection. Non-EU licence holders whose licence is not in the Roman alphabet should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP). Verify the specific requirements for your chosen supplier at the time of booking.
-
Do I need a special sticker to drive into Santa Cruz de Tenerife?
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife has an active Low Emission Zone (ZBE — Zona de Bajas Emisiones) covering the city centre, in line with Spain's national environmental legislation. Vehicles require a valid DGT environmental sticker (etiqueta ambiental) to enter the zone unrestricted. Most standard hire cars from reputable suppliers will already carry the appropriate sticker. Confirm this at collection if you plan to drive into the city centre. The ZBE is currently in a phased enforcement and adaptation period — restrictions apply, but the enforcement regime is being introduced gradually. If you are visiting Tenerife primarily for the southern resorts and the island's natural sites, you are unlikely to need to enter the ZBE at all.
-
Can I do a one-way hire between Tenerife South Airport and the north of the island?
- One-way hire between Tenerife South (TFS) and Tenerife North (TFN) airports, or between either airport and a resort or city-centre collection point, is available through selected suppliers. A one-way fee may apply depending on the supplier and the route. This is a practical option for visitors whose itinerary takes them from one end of the island to the other without retracing the route. The drive between the two airports covers approximately 60 km via the TF-1 and TF-5 and takes around 55–65 minutes in normal traffic. Confirm one-way availability and any associated fee at the time of booking.
-
Which airport should I use to collect my hire car in Tenerife?
- The answer depends on where you are staying. Tenerife South Airport (TFS) is the right choice for visitors based in the main southern resorts — Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, and Playa de las Américas are all within 15–20 minutes via the TF-1. Tenerife North Airport (TFN) is better suited to visitors based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (around 15 minutes via the TF-5) or Puerto de la Cruz (around 25–30 minutes via the TF-5). If you are flying into the south but staying in the north, collecting at TFS and driving up via the TF-1 and TF-5 takes approximately one hour in normal traffic. Most visitors flying into Tenerife on international routes land at TFS.
-
Are there toll roads in Tenerife?
- No. There are no toll roads anywhere on Tenerife or across the Canary Islands. The TF-1 — the main motorway running along the south and east of the island — and the TF-5 across the north are both free to use at all times. This is one of the practical advantages of driving in Tenerife compared to mainland Spain, where motorway tolls can add meaningfully to costs over a multi-day hire.
-
When is the cheapest time to book car hire in Tenerife?
- Tenerife operates with two distinct demand peaks: winter (mid-December through January) and summer (July–August). The most competitive rates are available in the months between these windows — February to June and September to November offer better pricing alongside quieter roads. Booking in advance remains the single most effective way to secure a preferred vehicle and a lower rate. For peak-period travel, booking six or more weeks ahead is advisable. For shoulder-season travel, two to three weeks is generally sufficient.
