Driving and Parking in Madrid: What You Need to Know

      • Getting around: Madrid sits at the centre of Spain's road network, with kilometre 0 at the Puerta del Sol. Six national motorways, the A-1 to A-6, run out from the city, and the Calle 30 (M-30) ring road closest to the centre can be reached from any of them. The M-40, M-45 and M-50 form the outer rings. Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) is listed at between 12 and 18 km from the centre depending on the source, and one guide gives 25 to 30 minutes by the M-40, with the A-2, M-11 and M-30 as busier alternatives.
      • Roadworks: Works on the A-5 at Paseo de Extremadura began diversions in December 2025 and are scheduled to finish in November 2026, and works to cover the M-30 near Las Ventas are scheduled to finish in spring 2027. Allow extra time on those approaches, especially at rush hour.
      • Low emission zone: The ZBE covers the whole municipality, with the M-40, M-45 and M-50 sections inside the city excluded, and it applies every day of the year. Vehicles without a DGT environmental label are barred. Two stricter zones sit inside it. In Distrito Centro, the former Madrid Central, vehicles with a 0 or ECO label have free access, and a label C vehicle may enter only to reach a public car park. A label B or unlabelled vehicle is banned. Plaza Elíptica allows labels 0, ECO and C, with label B access restricted to set conditions. The fine for entering without the required label is listed at 200 euros, reduced to 100 euros if paid early. Your hire car carries a label, and the supplier can tell you which, so check it before you drive towards the centre.
      • Car parks: The Plaza de España car park (EMT) is listed with a 1.9 m height limit and round-the-clock opening. The automated car park on Calle Tudescos is listed with a 2 m height limit, a maximum length of 5.25 m and a maximum width of 2.20 m, and it requires a valid B, C, ECO or 0 label for the central zone. Several car parks serve the Plaza Mayor area, including Plaza de Oriente, Santo Domingo and La Latina. A larger people carrier or a car with a roof box may not fit under the lower limits. Some staffed garages in the centre, such as those on Calle de Pizarro and Calle Hernán Cortés, ask you to leave the keys with an attendant, and lost or damaged keys are excluded from standard CDW cover, so choose a self-park garage if you prefer to keep the keys.
      • Tolls: The radial toll roads R-2, R-3, R-4, R-5 and AP-41 (towards Toledo) are in service, and the A-6 becomes the AP-6 toll road after Villalba. The toll amounts change, so keep a card to hand at the barriers and check the current price before you travel.
      • Parking and fines: One listing describes a staffed underground car park as the only way to park in the central district without risk of a fine. Leave the car in a car park and use the metro for short trips inside the M-30.
      • Best time to drive: Avoid the early morning and the last days of holidays on the airport roads, and allow extra time on weekday evenings on the Calle 30.

Top Places to Visit from Madrid by Car

      • Aranjuez — about 49 km south, roughly 42 to 50 minutes by car. The Royal Palace and its gardens make an easy half day.
      • San Lorenzo de El Escorial — about 58 km north-west, roughly 46 minutes to 1 hour. The monastery is the main sight, and the drive is short enough to combine with an afternoon in the town.
      • Toledo — about 70 to 72 km south-west, roughly 52 minutes to 1 hour by car. Parking in the old town is limited, so use a car park at the edge and walk in. The AP-41 toll road leads towards Toledo.
      • Segovia — about 91 km north-west, roughly 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes. The Roman aqueduct is in the centre, so park outside the old town.
      • Ávila — about 109 km west, roughly 1 hour 12 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. The medieval walls are intact, and the road to Salamanca passes close to Ávila, so one guide suggests combining both on a single trip.

When is the Best Time to Hire a Car in Madrid?

Peak season: June to August is the busiest period, with July and August often passing 35°C and sometimes reaching 40°C. Many locals leave for the coast, and some small shops and restaurants close in August. December is also busy, and the Puerta del Sol is crowded around Christmas. Collect the car early in the day in summer, and keep water in the car on the longer drives.

Shoulder season: March to May and September to October are the best months for the day trips, with milder temperatures and thinner crowds. San Isidro, the city's patron saint festival, falls on 15 May, and Holy Week in late March or early April brings processions through the centre, so allow extra time for city-centre drives on those dates.

Low season: January, February and November are the quietest months, with cold weather and some closures in January. November is the rainiest month, and snow in the city is rare, though the Navacerrada area in the mountains north of the city is a ski destination.

Advance booking: Book several weeks ahead for the summer, Christmas and Holy Week, and earlier for automatic cars or larger vehicles. Free cancellation means booking early carries no penalty.

How Payment Works for Car Hire in Madrid

A rental prepayment confirms your booking online with Instant Confirmation, and you pay the balance directly to the supplier on arrival, when you collect the car. The price and vehicle class shown at booking are the terms you receive at the desk, and cancellation is free. The supplier may place an excess hold on the main driver's credit card, so check that the card in the driver's name has enough available limit.

Car Hire Pick-Up Locations in Madrid

Green Motion supplies car hire in Madrid through eCarBookers. Your booking confirmation from eCarBookers locks in your price and your vehicle class before you arrive. You pay the balance at the car rental desk on collection, and the terms confirmed at booking are the terms you receive. Zero-excess cover is an option you can select from the supplier at the desk, and you should always confirm your hire in advance to guarantee your price from the moment you collect the keys. Photograph the vehicle thoroughly at collection and again at return, so that you hold a dated record of its condition.

      • Madrid Airport (MAD) — your booking voucher shows where and when the car is collected and returned, and it is the definitive source for the meeting point.
      • Madrid Atocha Railway Station — the voucher confirms the pick-up point and the opening hours for your date.

What is the minimum age to hire a car in Madrid?

Can I pick up my hire car in Madrid and drop it off somewhere else?
One-way hire is available with some suppliers and routes. A one-way fee may apply, and it is shown in the total before you confirm. Enter your pick-up and drop-off locations when you search, and check the booking confirmation for the terms.
Do I pay now or when I collect the car in Madrid?
You confirm your booking online with a rental prepayment, and you pay the balance directly to the supplier on arrival, at the desk. The full rental amount is not charged at the time of booking.
What happens if I cancel my car hire in Madrid?
Cancellation is free. The terms for your booking are shown in your booking confirmation, and because the full rental amount has not been taken, your plans can change without a large sum tied up in the hire.

Green Motion serves Madrid through eCarBookers. Your booking voucher is the definitive source for where and when the car is collected and returned, so check it before you travel.
What documents do I need for car hire in Madrid?
Each driver needs a valid driving licence and photo identification, and the main driver needs a credit card in their own name. Drivers with a licence issued outside the EU should also carry an international driving permit where required. Check your booking confirmation for the documents your supplier asks for.
What insurance is included with my car hire in Madrid?
The basic rate includes the supplier's standard collision damage waiver (CDW), which carries an excess. The exact amount is shown before you confirm your booking. Tyres, glass, underbody damage, lost or damaged keys, and a flat battery caused by driver error are typically excluded from standard CDW cover across the car hire industry. A zero-excess option can be selected from the supplier at the desk on collection. Always check your booking confirmation for the specific terms applicable to your hire.
Do I need a credit card to hire a car in Madrid?
The main driver needs a credit card in their own name. The supplier may place an excess hold on it at the desk, so the card needs enough available limit to cover the hold. Check your booking confirmation for the payment cards your supplier accepts.
What is the best time to book car hire in Madrid for the lowest prices?
Book several weeks ahead for the summer, Christmas and Holy Week, and earlier for automatic cars or larger vehicles. March to May and September to October are quieter and often easier on price. Free cancellation means you can book early and change your plans without a penalty.
Can I rent a car in Madrid and pay on arrival?
Yes. Pay on arrival car hire through eCarBookers means the balance is paid to the supplier when you collect the car. Your booking confirmation shows the price, the vehicle class and the amount due, so nothing changes between booking and collection.
      Is my booking confirmed instantly?
Yes. A rental prepayment confirms your booking online with Instant Confirmation, and your booking confirmation arrives straight away with the price, the vehicle class and the amount due on collection.
Is there a low emission zone in Madrid?
Yes. The ZBE covers the whole municipality every day of the year and bars vehicles without a DGT environmental label. Two stricter zones, Distrito Centro and Plaza Elíptica, allow only certain labels, and in Distrito Centro a label C vehicle may enter only to reach a public car park. The fine is listed at 200 euros. Check which label your hire car carries before you drive towards the centre, and park outside the zone or in a car park.
How far is Madrid Airport from the city centre?
Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) is listed at between 12 and 18 km from the city centre depending on the source. One guide gives 25 to 30 minutes by the M-40, and the route can be slower during rush hour.
