Dallas is a vast, sprawling city built around the car — but the downtown core and the major highways require some preparation before you set out, particularly for EU visitors unfamiliar with US urban driving.

• Downtown Dallas driving: Downtown Dallas is laid out on a grid centred around Main Street, Elm Street, and Commerce Street running east-west, intersected by numbered streets running north-south. One-way street systems operate throughout the core — follow signs carefully and use GPS navigation set to real-time traffic. Peak congestion builds on the downtown expressways — particularly I-30, I-35E, and I-45 — between 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–18:30 on weekdays. Top Places to Visit from Dallas by Car

Though it's under an hour's drive from Dallas to Fort Worth, it's still one of the most popular road trips from Dallas. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District delivers twice-daily longhorn cattle drives down Exchange Avenue — the last remaining cattle drives in the United States. The Cultural District, a short drive south, clusters world-class museums including the Kimbell Art Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth within walking distance of each other. Waco — Magnolia Market and the Brazos River — approximately 102 miles south via I-35E, around 1 hour 30 minutes. Waco is a historic town situated along the banks of the winding Brazos River. Magnolia Market at the Silos — the retail complex built by Chip and Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper — is the main draw for most visitors, but the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum and Cameron Park's riverside trails are worth the time.
